Al-Mutrah Fish Market

There is a place in Muscat, Oman famous for its fish market. It is the famous port which the legendary Sinbad set sailed long time ago. It is called al-Mutrah. This is where most of the weekend, Malaysian would buy lots of fish because of the cheap price. Just want to share few pictures of the market. The weird thing about this place is, they divide the market into two sections. One is where you can buy the fish, and then you bring them to a place beside it which offers service for cutting and cleaning the fish. You had to pay like RM10-Rm30 for the fishes that they cleaned for you. Maybe its because as you can see from the pictures the tuna fish is like huge. Also the arabs seem to favor eating sharks. The price is quite expensive but maybe it had a good market here so every weekend you can see they pull out like big and small sharks from the boats for selling. One of my favourite fish is kingfish which are quite cheap in Oman compared to KL. So if you want to come to Muscat, do visit this place. They also have a small vegetable market right next to this place. They had very nice range of vegetables and they make sure only good quality ones are sold here. [click to see more pictures]

  1. dont know about markets in muscat (tak pernah pi kan..), tapi ngapa pasar2 kat negeri omputih bersih2 compared to our wet markets?

bukan nak mengutuk tempat sendiri but this is the reality…i’ve been to markets in lots of places, and they are clean… i’m not talking about supermarket here, but wet market….

but then, i’ve not been to markets in india or china… maybe they are just as bad as our wet markets…..

p/s : love flea markets, though

  2. hey…how come i didnt see all the other pics tadi..? mm well, yeah, looking at them pictures, yeah…pasar muscat pun bersih, ya…

i think i know why…as ampin mentioned, they clean the fish kat tempat lain and not where they sell the fishes…make sense…that way, tempat jual ikan depa bersih dan menyegarkan… maybe we should start doing that in malaysia…

  3. good idea

  4. hey ampin,

its nice to see people from oman. Live in oman for about 3 years! really missed it now…i see see you live at around dhiab street area.. hehe that where i use to live.. enjoy the hot summer wasther now!

  5. Why i didnt see any ladies at the market? is it like a norm there in oman that only man goes to markets?ladies don’t? If that is so I’ll be dead if i live there.. I just looooveeee to go to the market- see the freshness of everything (yeah despite the smell). Just look at the coulour of tomatoes and the cabbage and the fish- wonderfully fresh! weird..i know…heheheh

oho, btw, subang jaya’s market is just as clean lah….eheheheh

  6. ya lah azlin, why there r no ladies kat market tu? wats the story ampin?
talking abt market my mind dah ter ingat macam macam resepi….hehehe yummy

azlin, come to slayang market, its heaven i tell u! cheappppppp
bertahun tahun i stay in subang felt cheated with the pricing

  7. you really want to know?
intro-you cant say no to religion

most of the culture here they follow islamic way truly
    i mean for everyday life
yeah its not so bad compared to saudi
you can still see women are shopping and stuff

the women here are not allowed to speak to man
i mean for friendship sake -non muhrim? hey some do it – and its their problem la
but for work sake yeah ok
    so they go to work
and go home or if they want to go out
they will go out wil girls only

    in the market
    fishermen are male mostly rite
so they tend to chop that place as mens place
yeah they divide the house works
    man shopped this stuff
and the women will cook it at home
    fair and square

    this is what i observed
    complain? tell god about it

  8. living this part of the globe yang dah terlalu banyak freedomnya
hmmmm sometimes we forget atau buat buat ‘ter’forget??
    need to be reminded sometimes

    anyway, i just luv pasar…….

  9. narnia- heard bout how cheap pasar selayang is tapi tak penah gi..eeheheh

ampin- thats not a surprise la sbb kat middle east mmg mcmtu. last time when i go to dubai its not that strict la..they even have disco for girls only..so you’ll be seeing all those ladies covered in their jubah but the moment they step in the ladies disco, comes all the sequinned sexy tops..ahahhahaha.

So ampin, judging from your explaination above, does it mean that you’ll be doing all the ‘fish marketing’ yourself when you’re married?kekekekkekekekekek……..

  10. mm..bersih….

  11. first of all these pictures that i took
not meant to show how clean their pasar is here
i dont care la as long as the fish is cheap and fresh

and lin, dubai is different from oman in many aspect
dubai is known as the las vegas of middle east
    drug, robbery, prostitute, evil etc
you can see them everyday in their local newspaper

    in oman
almost total zero any of the above
    yeah no kidding

i dont mind going to the market to buy fish
only that i mind waking up early like 8am to do the buying
but hey at least im not going to do the fishing rite? hehe

  12. i think you guys need to visit my pasar Siti Khadijah in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. You will be amazed that most of the traders are females. Well, i m sure its not as clean but its extremely cheap? :)

  13. ampin said, dubai is known as the las vegas of middle east
drug, robbery, prostitute, evil etc.But live dubai much much safer than malaysia.
And the local muslim in dubai r very good, wlu pun tdpt ramai matsalleh.
