Nikon D40 Firmware Upgrade

These applies on D40 Nikon users only. You guys can now use these step by step to upgrade the firmware(software inside the camera) to the newest version which is 1.1.  If you find trouble or you are not sure how to upgrade after reading this easy guide, please ask.

D40 firmware update version 1.1

Modifications enabled and issues addressed with D40 A and B firmware Ver. 1.1

  • The product will be “Certified for Windows Vista”.
  • Support for the new USB Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) has been added.
  • The PTP option in the setup menu’s USB item will be modified to MTP/PTP. The icon will also be modified
  • The range of possible settings for the Date option in the setup menu’s World time item will be changed to 2000-2099.
  • An issue that caused the ISO auto feature to be disabled, when a two-button reset operation was performed with ISO sensitivity set to any option other than ISO 200, has been resolved.
  • When attempting to edit images, which had already been edited using a computer, with options in the D40’s retouch menu, the camera sometimes froze.  Therefore, images that have been edited using a computer can no longer be edited using the camera.
  • An issue that prevented accurate recording of flash output value when manual flash photography was applied with use of the Nikon Speedlight SB-400 has been resolved so that flash output value is accurately recorded.
  • Errors in English, Polish, Swedish, and Traditional Chinese menus have been corrected.
  • When white balance is fine-tuned, “+” or “?” will be displayed with the following icons:
    • White balance mode icon in the shooting information display
    • White balance mode icon in the shooting menu
  • When the mode dial is set to a Digital Vari-Program and the AF-area mode setting is changed, the AF-area mode setting will no longer revert to the default setting with the following operations:
    • The camera is turned off
    • Monitor and exposure meters turn off automatically (auto meter off)
  • The electronic analog exposure displays will flash in the viewfinder and the shooting information display when:
    • The brightness of the subject exceeds the range that can be controlled by the camera, whether too bright or too dark
    • While in P (Programmed Auto) exposure mode with the built-in flash raised.

Upgrading the Firmware for the D40

Thank you for choosing a Nikon product. This guide describes how to upgrade the camera firmware for the D40.
If you are not confident that you can perform the update successfully, the update can be performed by a Nikon service representative.
The D40 has two sets of firmware, A and B, which must be updated separately. After updating the A firmware, repeat steps 4–5, below, to upgrade the B firmware.
Important
The camera may be damaged if power is interrupted or camera controls are operated during the update. Do not turn the camera off, remove or disconnect the power source, or operate camera controls during the update. If the update is not completed successfully and the camera becomes inoperable, take the camera to a Nikon-authorized service representative for inspection.

Get ready

To upgrade the camera firmware, you will need:
The camera
A UC-E4 USB cable or a memory card reader
One of the following power sources:
—An EH-5 AC adapter and EP-5 AC adapter connector
—A fully-charged EN-EL9 rechargeable Li-ion battery
A Nikon-approved memory card that has been formatted in the camera.

Check the current camera firmware version

1 Turn the camera on.
2 Press the MENU button and select Full for the CSM/Setup menu option in the setup menu.
3 Select Firmware version in the setup menu.
4 Two firmware versions (A and B) will be displayed. Both should be 1.00.
5 Press OK and turn the camera off.

Download and extract the new firmware

1 Right-click an empty area of the desktop and select New > Folder from the menu that appears. Name the folder as desired.
2 Left click the “Click Here to Agree to License, Validate and Start Download link on the download site. Save to the “New Folder” you have just created.
3 After the download completes, open the New Folder.Highlight the folder on the right, left click “Extract all files” on the left. Save the extracted file to the same New Folder.

Copy the firmware to the memory card

The firmware can be copied to the camera memory card either by connecting the computer directly to the camera using the USB cable, or by removing the memory card from the camera and inserting it in a card reader.
Important
Only one of the two sets of firmware (A or B) can be updated at a time. Use separate memory cards for each set of firmware, or update one set as described below, then format the memory card and repeat the process for the second set.
Direct USB Connection
Note: Use the EH-5 AC adapter and EP-5 AC adapter connector or a fully-charged EN-EL9 rechargeable Li-ion battery.
1 Turn the camera off and insert a formatted memory card. For information on formatting memory cards, see the camera Guide to Digital Photography.
2 After turning the camera on, press the MENU button, select the setup menu, and set the USB option to Mass Storage.
3 Turn the camera off and connect the USB cable as shown below.

4 Turn the camera on.*
If PictureProject is installed, it will start automatically; click Cancel to exit.
* AutoPlay (Windows XP)
Under Windows XP, a Removable Disk dialog may be displayed. Click Cancel.
5 Copy the firmware to the memory card.
5-1. Copy the firmware to the removable disk corresponding to the camera.
When the camera is connected and turned on, a new “Removable Disk” icon will be displayed in My Computer. Copy “AD400110.bin” (A firmware) or “BD400110.bin” (B firmware) from the “D40Update” folder to this removable disk.

5-2. When copying is complete, double-click the removable disk and confirm that the file has been copied successfully.
6 Disconnect the camera from the computer.

Important
Be sure to copy the firmware to the root directory of the memory card. The camera will not recognize the new firmware if it is placed in a folder under the root directory.
Card Reader
1 Connect the card reader to the computer and insert a formatted memory card.*
If PictureProject is installed, it will start automatically; click Cancel to exit.
 
* AutoPlay (Windows XP)
Under Windows XP, a Removable Disk dialog may be displayed. Click Cancel.
2 The memory card will appear in “My Computer” as a removable disk. Copy the firmware to the removable disk as described in Step5 of “Direct USB Connection.”
3 Right click the removable disk and select Eject from the menu that appears. Remove the memory card from the card reader.
Important
Be sure to copy the firmware to the root directory of the memory card. The camera will not recognize the new firmware if it is placed in a folder under the root directory.

Update the camera firmware

During the update, do not:
Remove the memory card
Turn the camera off
Operate any of the camera controls
Attach or remove lenses
Unplug or disconnect the AC adapter
Remove the battery
Subject the camera to powerful electromagnetic noise
Any of the above actions could cause the camera to become inoperable.
1 Insert the memory card containing the firmware into the camera.
2 Turn the camera on.
3 Press the MENU button and select Firmware version in the setup menu.
4 The current firmware version will be displayed. Highlight Version up and press the multi selector to the right.
5 A firmware update dialog will be displayed. Highlight Yes and press OK to begin the update.

6 The update may take anywhere from two to five minutes. Do not perform any operations while the messages shown at right are displayed.
  The messages will clear from the display when the update is complete.
7 Once the messages have cleared from the display, confirm that the update was completed successfully.

7-1. Turn the camera off and remove the memory card.
7-2. Check the camera firmware version as described in Step2, “Check the current camera firmware version.”
7-3. If the version displayed is 1.10, the update was successful.

8 Format the memory card.
After upgrading A firmware, return to Step 4 and upgrade B firmware.
9 If you changed the USB setting from PTP to Mass Storage to update the camera firmware, return to the USB menu and select PTP.
This completes the firmware update.
